  • Role of the VP

    Dear Diary,

I’ve just talked to Barack about specifying my role publicly. I mentioned that this is really embarrassing that I’ve been completely ignored since the election, and that all the other presidents have clarified their Vice Presidents’ roles within the first few weeks. Unfortunately, this rant ended with me saying, “I want some real power, man, and I want it NOW! And I want you to make sure the rest of the WORLD knows how much power I have!!” I may have gotten a little overwrought.

But Barack, maintaining his stoic countenance as always, told me that he was actually saving this address for last, as it would be his best one. He further tried to reassure me that he would “do everything in his power” to get this going as soon as possible. Everything in his power? What does that even mean?! Does he basically have absolute power to make whatever announcements he wants? Ugh, if anything, I’m the one who’s lacking in power.

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

    Dear Diary,

Happy Thanksgiving! Today is truly a day to be thankful, and I really am blessed. I have a beautiful wife who loves me, and whom I love very much. I also have successful three children and five adorable grandchildren, all of whom I love very much. I do miss Neilia and Naomi, but I’m lucky to still have my other two children. And Jill has been a godsend – I don’t know what I would do without her. Not to mention, I’ve been elected the Vice President of the United States. That is certainly something to be thankful for, I’m just hoping that I’ll get to do something soon.

I hope that other families out there get to enjoy their Thanksgiving. I know it’s hard right now, but I guess we have to remember to be thankful for what we have, even if it’s not much. But again, Happy Thanksgiving!

    Until next time,
    Joe

    Dear Diary,

I’m becoming increasingly concerned with the way the Obama Administration has been run. I haven’t done anything! Yeah, Barack brought me cupcakes. Big deal. I want power, and meetings, and something to do besides sit around and twiddle my thumbs! Plus, others are noticing that I haven’t been give any responsibility yet. Just takes that New York Times article – how embarrassing! If every other president has defined what the Vice President’s role will be up until Barack, then something isn’t right.

I always thought that I would have a big foreign policy role. And everyone’s saying that I’m going to be the counselor. But the only counseling I’ve done is to say that I approve of all the choices, and that’s nothing! Of course I approve – what Democrat wouldn’t?

  • Ted Kaufman to Fill My Seat

    Dear Diary,

Governor Minner has appointed Ted Kaufman, one of my aides, to fill my seat in the Senate. And I couldn’t be happier! He was my closest advisor and served the longest time, mostly as Chief of Staff, and I certainly think he’ll do a great job carrying on my legacy. But Ted’s saying that he’s going to step down in 2010. I did mention to him that Beau might choose to run in 2010, so Ted might be doing this to appease me, which is fine. I just keep hoping that Beau will run for this position when he returns from Iraq (God willing), but Beau wants to do things his own way. Still, he’d make a great senator. Beau’s whole thing is that he doesn’t want to just get elected because of me – he wants to run on an even playing field. But if he runs in two years, then it will be on an even playing field.

    Dear Diary,

Can’t believe it’s true, but for the first time since entering office in my early thirties, I’m actually moving to Washington, DC. No longer will I be known as “Amtrak Joe.” I think Jill has mixed feelings about the move, though bless her heart, she’s been my biggest supporter. She likes the idea of being Second Lady, but Jill will have to give up her teaching position at Delaware Technical & Community College, since I don’t think that daily Amtrak ride is quite her thing. But hopefully, she can get a similar teaching position while serving as Second Lady.

Never did like the title, “Second Lady.” It’s like Vice President. A diminished status, as if to say, not as good as the President or the First Lady. In my opinion, the Vice President should be called the Co-President. After all, we know Dick Cheney was really the one running the White House anyway.

    Dear Diary,

It’s been one day since Beau left for Iraq. I’ve tried to keep a level head about this, but I just get so upset that he’s over there for this war that should never have been started in the first place. It’s really tough knowing he’s over there in all that danger.

I thought if I could get him a seat in the Senate by having him take my place, then he wouldn’t go at all. But that isn’t the case. Beau’s refused to take the Senate seat. He wants to be the attorney general instead. Breaks my heart though, to see him putting himself in danger. After all our family tragedies, I just want to enjoy the rest of my life with my sons alive.

Wish I could work out a way for him to come home prematurely, since I’m Vice President, but I just don’t think that would look good to the public. I have to admit, it does look good to have a son serving for our country. Brings out that good ol’ fashioned Biden patriotism. Hey, that’s a good line!

  • Say Goodbye to George W. Bush

    Dear Diary,

It’s incredible to think that we have won the election. But we haven’t been inaugurated yet. George Bush still has 60 days left in office, and I think that it’s only fitting that we write letters of farewell to him. After all, he presided under one of the most divided eras of our country, and many of us have mixed emotions as he departs office. I certainly have a lot I’d like to say to him.

After finding a website named http://goodbye.us that compiles goodbye letters to him, I’m going to write one, and I encourage everyone else to do so as well.

    Until next time,

    Dear Diary,

Got an email from John McCain last night asking if I need any help as Vice President. Give me a break. As if I would want help from him. Heard he met with Barack too. Guess Barack's better at reconciliation after mean remarks. But John and I were actually friends before the campaign started. But he insulted me, and I’m still waiting for the apology and (hopefully) some roses before we can proceed as friends. Well, the apology at the very least… I’m planning to write a curt “no thank you” in return.

Just found out that Barack and Michelle were on 60 Minutes last night… And I wasn’t asked to join. I know they’re a couple and it looks cute to do things together, but isn’t the Vice President a very important guy? Almost seems like they were trying to keep things under wraps so they wouldn’t have to ask me to accompany them.

    Dear Diary,

It has been a while since I last wrote celebrating our victory. And what a win! After the last two presidential elections, it was nice to finally celebrate. And, I won in Delaware! No surprise there, but it’s always nice to know the people are still with me and want the seat to stay Democratic.

Sadly, I didn’t get to make any acceptance speeches on election night. Heard Sarah Palin was really bummed about not getting to make a concession speech to her fans too. You could see how upset she was when John McCain was speaking in Arizona that night. Republicans were probably just trying to get her off the national stage as soon as possible to avoid any more embarrassment. So at least I wasn’t the only one denied of more press coverage.

It’s been nice to have a break right now though… Poor Barack had to jump right in and start planning his cabinet.

    Dear Diary,

Mccain has just delivered his best speech in the past two years. It was thoughtful, sincere, and I am so proud of him for being such a wonderful statesman. It was interesting that he declared the failure to be his own, and not that of the voters. He did thank Sarah Palin, which was kind of him, especially considering the bad press that she’d received from the media, and even members of her own party. And I am proud that he thanked of his campaign advisors, and all those who volunteered for him.

McCain did mention me as an old friend, for which I am happy. I am proud of him for returning to be the old John – pledging to support Barack in all of his endeavors. This truly was the John McCain that I’ve known for most of my life, and I’m proud of him for such a gracious speech.

    Until next time,
    Joe

    Dear Diary,

I am also, proud to say that Elizabeth Dole has been taken out of the Senate. I never liked her anyway. And after that smear campaign, it’s so great to see Kay Hagan beat Dole. And she’s suing Dole. That’s one more seat in the Senate for the Democrats! Of course, we didn’t pick up the seat in Kentucky, which means that we probably won’t have a filibuster majority. Still, nice to know that the country is leaning so Democratically.

    Until next time,
    Joe

    Dear Diary,

I am ECSTATIC! Learned a couple hours ago that Pennsylvania was a huge win with 56% of the vote. And to think that was a major hope for McCain. We certainly campaigned in that state, and I would like to think that it was my work with Hilary Clinton’s that brought about the victory. Also THRILLED to learn that we won Ohio with 52%! Not quite as much as was originally expected, but hey – we won.

I’ll have to send Hillary a muffin basket or something to express my thanks. I admit, she had some great speeches in Pennsylvania. But I know those Pennsylvanians love their Biden. Still, a muffin or fruit basket would be nice.

    Back to watching CNN….

    Until next time,

    Dear Diary,

Can’t believed the protesters at my rally at Florida State University. Felt I dealt with them effectively though, and I always love it when Republicans are forced to hear my message. Especially when I’m sure they’d rather not. David upset that I referred to them as whiners, but I think it was appropriate. Plus, humor is always a good thing. McCain has been praised for his sense of humor, and this was a great chance to for me to show that I can crack jokes too! Anybody who thinks otherwise clearly doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Barack and McCain each had interviews at the football game. Heard it went well for both, with McCain showing his usual sense of humor… I gotta work on being seen with a sense of humor. Perhaps this will be a way to win people over, which I’ll need if I ever want to run for president in 2012 or (more likely) 2016.

I’m hoping that Sarah Palin runs in 2012. Her fans certainly want her too, and I think it’s safe to say that her those opposed do as well.

    Dear Diary,

Well, after being hidden away for so long by David and the rest of the campaign advisors, they FINALLY let me in the media spotlight. And it’s about time! I’m certainly the most qualified member of the Democratic ticket, but of course I have to answer to a bunch of young’uns. Still, they gave me the publicity time on Halloween night. when everyone’s either trick-or-treating or at some party. Still, some time is better than no time. And perhaps because of my stellar interview, I will be allowed some more interview time, since I’ve proved that I’m great in front of the camera. Unlike Sarah Palin…

I thought it was hilarious when Palin received boos after mentioning the Phillies’ win in Pirates territory. They were so pissed, and actually booed her at her own rally. Wow. Probably should have researched the local sports teams’ loyalties if she’s gonna bring it up in a debate.
