Problems can happen anywhere; and people can make mistakes. However, criminal behavior often goes far beyond "mistakes;" and, when it does, it begins to send the wrong message to average people-- especially impressionable kids.

There's a kind of constant fantasy that we Americans perpetuate that everything we buy is paid for fairly all the way down to its source material. That the clothes you're wearing were made by workers earning living wages, that the cotton they spin into blue jeans was picked by people who get to go home after working eight hour shifts. Either we keep that fantasy in our heads or we don't think very much about where our stuff comes from at all. We buy it at the store from friendly salespeople who are presumably making enough to get by and that's about all we know about it.
But the truth is that we depend upon a lot of injustice in order to keep things as cheap as they are in this country. Go far enough down the line, and you'll even start dealing with straight-up slave labor. Those shoes you're wearing, that phone you're texting with, that computer you're using? Don't be surprised if all these things got to you, at least in part, via the hands of slaves.

If illegal drug use isn't enough of a problem, there is a newer form of drug use that is becoming increasingly popular. Not only have kids died from using synthetic drugs, these products are perfectly legal. It is time to force those who manufacture these products to take them off the market.

We’ve increasingly viewed the world through the lens of data and numerical values. We look at the economic recovery in terms of stock value, unemployment percentages, holiday consumer spending, or corporate profit margins. We see environmental destruction as a series of numbers as well; tons of carbon emitted, acres of forest cleared, toxins in parts per million. However, when we look at causation, at the way in which one thing pulls on an manipulates another, numbers barely do it justice. It’s reasonably understood that there is only so much old hardwood to harvest, only so much stone, metal, mineral, of crude to be mined or drilled, and only so much fresh potable water to drink or use for irrigation. Now public policy group Demos has released a new report that attaches our economic growth to our environmental destruction, and shows a closely related inverse relationship. As our economy expands, our environment degrades.
